Are you a shopaholic??? ... it's time to spring clean!

If the above image from the movie 'Confessions of a shopaholic' looks in any way similar to your own fashion life, or you have a wardrobe bursting at the seams full of clothes that you never wear... or even worse if your attic or spare room consists of boxes of clothes that "maybe someday you will fit into or wear again"... what girl doesn't have a bunch of those clothes? Then perhaps you should think about Spring Cleaning your wardrobe for a good cause!

Norma Smurfit is looking for people to take stalls at the annual "SPRING CLEAN FOR CHARITY" event taking place in the Shelbourne Hall, RDS, Dublin from 11am – 5pm on Sunday March 13th 2011. Basically it is free of charge and promises to be a fun and fashionable day out with some of Ireland's most fashionable ladies attending. All you have to do is bring all your unwanted (but still wearable) clothes and sell them on to a new loving owner. All proceeds will go to St. Vincent De Paul so not only are you spring celaning your wardrobe but doing a good deed too!

If you don't have any clothes to sell but think there may be some little treasures to buy - admission will be €5 with children under 12 free of charge and payable on arrival.

Emmanuelle Alt - Parisian Style Star's new Role!

The fashion world was thrown into a frenzy last month with the shock departure of Carine Roitfeld from Vogue Paris. Roitfeld is regarded, as the mastermind behind the most powerful imagery in fashion media surely the infamous magazine couldn’t survive without her?

Well have no fear because the uber talented Emmanuelle Alt will be taking over the reigns as editor-in-chief and there is no better woman; not only has she been Carine’s right hand woman with her creative director role since 2001 but she is also the stylist and creative vision behind some of the most memorable and infamous shoots the magazine has had over the past decade.

But Alt has more than just a Vogue Paris string to her bow (as if that alone wasn’t enough), she is also the creative director behind many past brand campaigns such as Gucci, Balmain and Guiseppe Zanotti. She has styled the international catwalks and campaign shoots for these iconic labels and continues to work closely with them!

Alt’s work evokes a raw sensuality that can only really be associated with her and Vogue Paris. There is something about the French and in particular French Women being at ease with their bodies and nudity on display… she does not create images like this for shock value, but more because embracing the female form is embracing beauty! Something Ireland really needs to start coming around to!

So here is looking forward to a new decade of Vogue Paris, and happily anticipating what Alt brings to the table.

Lanvin’s Alter Ego

Ever since the hotly anticipated Lanvin collaboration with H+M sold out within minutes of going on sale, fashion’s man-of-the-moment became Alber Elbaz.

Not that he is new to adoring female fans! His beautiful collections have been admired by fashion’s and Hollywood’s élite ever since he was named artistic director of Lanvin in 2001!

To look at, Elbaz isn’t what you would typically associate with a top fashion designer; he doesn’t have the outrageous dress sense of Galliano, the debonair and sophistication of Tom Ford or even the iconic style sense of Karl Lagerfeld! In fact, Elbaz looks more like the cute, dorky kid around the corner… complete with ill-fitting suits and over-sized dickie bows! (Which makes him all the more endearing).

But forget first impressions – Elbaz designs like his alter ego… the hero who saved and revived a collapsing French fashion house and dresses women to perfection!

Bugs and insects became a recurring inspiration for this season’s collection; however, the woman Elbaz created was much more complicated than that!

She is a bold hybrid of an insect and a superhero… think Spiderman – but with style and without the geeky alter ego!

From subtle undercover agents wearing dark sunglasses in black draped jumpsuits to caped crusaders in chiffon pleated bodysuits, the designs can then morph from cocooned structured outfits into full-on drama in elegant evening gowns that billowed in the wind like Superman’s cape!

Many of the dresses were form fitting with cut-out details, skeletal pleated mini dresses, and body-armour in earthy tones with strong structure and bold embellishments… almost like the outer shell of an insect or the protective uniform of a superhero. The sheath style resembling a second skin was another beautiful option with that stunning draping we love and expect from Lanvin designs!

My favourite look from the catwalk has already been worn by ‘Gossip Girl’ Blake Lively, a stunning nude vest with a leather camel harness and belt, large bug jewel and stunning mint green flowing skirt. Other stars also seen wearing his S/S 11 collection before it hits stores are Rachel McAdams and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The show itself started out quite dark, showcasing the ‘alter-ego’ daywear looks, with sensible flat footwear, discrete sunglasses, office appropriate attire and even the odd day/work bag available. It was only when ‘At Last’ by Etta James came onto the playlist that an array of colourful and vibrant outfits abounded the runway, more leg became apparent and the collection itself took a turn towards a more typically Lanvin look. The show ended with the army of models dressed to kill (literally) taking their final walk together!

All Aboard the Orient Express - LOUIS VUITTON S/S 11' REVIEW

While in New York recently, I was walking through Soho when I was approached by a man attempting to sell me cheap knock-off Louis Vuitton bags. Honestly, it wasn’t even the imitation leather or slightly dysfunctional zip that turned me off… it was that over-exposed, over-repeated logo plastered across the fabric. I just thought -Tacky!

And it wasn’t until I saw this season’s LV catwalk show that my faith in and love for the brand was restored! Louis Vuitton has come a long way since the days of gaudy mass-produced, monogram bags and although it is still very much a key-piece associated with the label, there is so much more they have to offer - ever since America’s fashion darling Marc Jacobs took the helm in 1997, the brand has gone from strength to strength.

This season, the catwalk collection was an abundance of collaborative inspirations. Memoirs of a Geisha meets the Great Gatsby meets Bugsy Malone on the Orient Express heading to the Art Deco district of Miami Beach!

1930s’ style dresses were updated in shimmering metallic knitted fabrics, sheer lace and other fabrics like satin and lurex in deep berry tones and glamorous golds with low-slung sequined obi-belts and dangerously plunging necklines!

Mandarin collars were featured throughout, with soft pyjama-style 2-piece looks and authentic oriental buttons… slightly undone at the base to give a more alluring appeal.

Applique played a huge part throughout, with tassel features adorning dresses, embellished tiger heads sewn onto knitwear, ribbons hanging from floral prints and sequins galore.

Animal print was apparent like it has never been seen before; entire shapes of animals were printed across dresses and suits in a very bold and vibrant manner! Something Cruella Deville would have been proud of!

Accessories were kept to a bare minimum with such elaborate dressing… strappy sandals and small evening bags. Hair was a side swept ‘30s’ bun, while make-up remained sultry with a shimmering smoky eye and dewy berry-tone lip.

It was a high-octane, vibrant show with a collection full of spice… I loved the trio of models shimmying down the catwalk flaunting their fans in an array of quality street colours… delicious!

Uncharacteristically Chanel!!!

Chanel was uncharacteristically casual this season, and underwent somewhat of a fashion make-under!

Naturally, there were elements of the iconic and historic brand – with tweed twin-sets, layered pearls and the classic pastel and monochrome colour schemes.

However, this season, Karl Lagerfeld seemed to be inspired by a new age of Chanel fans; fashion IT girls such as Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo and Mischa Barton have been putting their youthful stamp on the label by wearing Chanel items in a new edgier way than before and it seems Karl gave his S/S 11’ collection a shot of youth serum too.

Typical twin-sets were given a modern overhaul with hot pants replacing skirts, teamed with understated t-shirts and bold floral blouses. One of my favourite looks was the deceptively prim and proper tweed jackets worn over matching waistcoats teamed with barely-there hot pants and edgy accessories such as chainmail fingerless gloves and chunky metallic cut-out shoes.

Small-deconstructed details gave the clothes a raw feel; frayed hems, raffia-style feathers on tops and bouffant-feathered skirts and cuffs and even hemlines, meanwhile denim was given a new lease of life with perforated fabric almost resembling the infamous tweed print.

This is possibly one of the most wearable collections we have seen from Chanel in years –- Lagerfeld said that a new use of texture and re-working of fabrics make this a dynamic collection with something for everyone, and I have to agree… one of his new tweed jackets would work very nicely into my wardrobe!

However, not one to shy away from a little drama, the finale to the collection saw supermodel Carmen Kass parade down the catwalk in a show-stopping, feathery peach-coloured dress with metallic perforated shoes. Although the look didn’t necessarily fit in with the rest of the collection it was nice to see an element of Chanel showmanship in what was otherwise a very delicate and understated show.

So what can we expect to sift down from catwalk to closet? Next season, look for fabric details like soft feathers, raw edges, perforated fabric and even selvedge edges. Metallic will remain a trend but in a much more muted way than the bolder Christmas looks!

Holly Fulton; 'A jet-set socialite with a crush on Joan Collins'

There was something very ‘Versace’ about Holly Fultons’s debut solo collection; the big hair and bright colour pops reminded me of the good old days of Gianni (okay granted I was 10 when he died but I still know my stuff). Not only was there a strong 80’s vibe with her colourful looks, but there were also some very vibrant prints in bright blues, oranges, yellows and dashes of monochrome. It reminded me of the art-deco district in Miami where there are stunning colours and patterns seen across the exterior of buildings in South Beach… which ironically is where Gianni Versace was murdered!

Alas apparently her inspiration actually came from France; with a colour palette inspired by glass artist Louis Barillet and the cinema du look of the 80’s. Although I prefer my comparison! Holly is taking her customers/fans on what seems to be a world tour; from safari chic with animal-like prints, to waterproof cruise control, to South Beach shopping and more... it seems like the collection belongs in the luggage of a jet-set socialite with a crush on Joan Collins.

This is Fulton’s first season showing solo at London Fashion Week, but she is by no means a newbie in the industry. She was the winner of Young Designer of the Year Awards at the Scottish Fashion Awards, has a British Fashion Award and she also won the Elle Style Award for New Designer 2010. So it’s clear to see why her collection is so strong and complete.

Her glamazon prints and passion for pop art and colour are clear to see in this powerful S/S 10’ collection. Her outfits have a carefree ease about them, but it’s the luxurious fabrics, vivid prints and luxe accessories that bring it from nonchalant to uber glamourous.

The rain-slicker yellow laser-cut dress with cheeky cocktail glass shapes around it certainly caught my eye. An innovative and slightly unusual choice of fabric, but the skater skirt silhouette is a flattering shape for every woman and I imagine the quirky design would be loved by cool fashionistas such as Zooey Deschanel and Fearne Cotton.

The stunning Palazzo Pants are my favourite pieces from her looks, with their tribal motif designs she allows them to be the statement piece and kept it simple on top with silk vests. The Art Deco necklace completes the outfit with a finished touch!

The City Shorts are a look you can imagine the stylish Olivia Palermo wearing for sure. Balancing the vivacious shorts with a simple shift silk top. This look oozes effortless glamour.

If this is only the beginning for Holly, I cannot wait to see what’s next!

'Futuristic Ice Maiden meets an Alien Ziggy Stardust’

It’s always exciting to be one of the first to witness a new emerging talent. And at the debut show of MASHA MA show that is certainly what happened! Her cool collection of origami influenced outfits lit up the catwalk in a swishing abundance of crisp whites and shimmering silvers. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just stepped into the North Pole, but she didn’t receive a frosty reception - quite the opposite, a collection of oohs and ahhs whispered from the front rows as outfit after outfit impressed editors and stylists alike.

Although she states that her inspiration was drawn from the industirla landscape of New York’s meat packing district; I would personally describe it as ‘Futuristic Ice Maiden meets an Alien Ziggy Stardust’. The collection had a little something for everyone’s taste, from the structured origami dresses, to the fluid draping of silvers, the sheer chiffons, to the tailored trousers, geometric shapes and overall fluidity and layering… I adored every single piece! And I’m not the only one, she has already caught the attention of publications such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel to name but a few.

Fashion Mode @ LFW

Fashion Mode is a novel approach to promoting new designers! It is a company led by Andrea Abraham whose soul purpose is to nurture and cultivate a new generation of fashion talent through catwalk shows, pr and marketing and with the ultimate aim of bringing back cutting-edge and innovation to London Fashion.

This year Fashion Mode was supporting 4 new rising stars; two menswear and two womenswear collections;

James Hillman

James Hillman’s collection was an interesting one – it is only recently that I have even begun to have an interest in menswear (it usually bores me), but Hillman’s 'Teddy boy' inspired looks took a special twist. He confused the viewers by creating a collection that was almost unisex in design and with his unusual mix of fabrics (silk, leather, chiffon and jersey), he clouded the boundaries between feminine and masculine looks! He seemed to take what was typical menswear silhouettes but distorted them by using unexpected fabrics and little touches of innovation here and there, like sheer boat-neck shirts, or the unusual short-shaped collars. His palette of grey hues kept the androgynous effect throughout and found myself picking out pieces that I too would wear. My favourite had to be the slate-grey chiffon trousers… a little risqué for an average guy perhaps… but team them with say Russell Brand or Kate Moss and you are onto a winner!

Elson Figueiredo

This menswear collection was inspired by the people who travelled with circuses and amusements shows in the 19th Century; otherwise known as Carnies! It was an interesting show because he had picked beautiful male models with very feminine features to display his creations, but unfortunately for me this distracted a little from the clothes as I found myself staring at the models faces instead. However, looking back at the pictures I now see he created an extremely wearable collection that has mass appeal. He describes his own designs as a “mish-mash of casual workwear and traditional tailoring”, we can see this with the more traditional menswear elements of breast pockets, tailored jackets and subtle elbow patches, combined with touches of gingham piping and binding in some of the looks.

Carlotta Barone

The most outspoken and politically charged collection belonged to Carlotta and was aptly called 'wear my skin'. The idea behind this was to create clothing that spoke her mind and boldly stated to fight against the racism. Digitally printed slogans of anti-rasicm were printed like newsprint all across these skin hugging bodysuits, almost like an entire tattooed body. But this wasn’t just a political statement; over these bodysuits was an extremely innovative collection. The outfits were delicately crafted in a way that resembled cages and slaves garbs; constructed by beautiful draping and clever tailoring she managed to find the perfect balance between femininity and sexy – focusing on body-contours and the structure of the female form.

Florian Jayet

Florian Jayet absolutely knocked my socks off. It was possibly my favourite collection of the four - His innovative designs were inspired by the outer shell of insects - which ultimately created the body-armour looks like an exoskeleton! The outfits were predominately made from leather (my favourite) but also incorporated bits of metallic to infuse a futuristic element. He names Paco Rabanne and Thierry Mugler as his main influences… but Jayet’s designs stand on their own and although unique I would wear every single one of his pieces. Pure craftsmanship!

Talent has no name...

There was one question I was frequently asked by editors and bloggers alike while at London Fashion Week ... "so WHO are you looking forward to seeing". But instead of listing a variety of heavy hitters such as Vivienne Westwood, Giles, Matthew Williamson etc etc, my answer was simple... the nobodys! Well, the nobodys yet!

What I love about London is it's thriving fashion talent and the opportunity to see a monoploy of unknown and up-and-coming designers is so much more exciting to me than the big names that I can see on style.com hours later anyway. I want to see the future of fashion - what we'll be wearing in years to come and where the next generation of fashionistas are taking us.

I will be reviewing some of my favourite new, up-and-coming and relatively unknown collections and designers I saw at LFW... I was lucky enough to see Masha Ma, Falguni and Peacock, Roksanda Illinic, Kinder Aggugini, Elliott J. Frieze, Fashion Mode, Ada Zanditon and Holly Fulton. I also spoke with some designers at the exhibition held inside Somerset house...a few amazing Jewellery designers in particular that I would like to share with you.

LFW 2010 - The Beginning

I am more than aware at how delayed my LFW report is… however, I reckon now that the fashion week buzz has died down and all the editors and fashionistas have trawled through Paris and Milan; it’s finally time for me to reflect back on fashions new hitlist! The new influential and upcoming designers shaping our future in fashion… and predicting what we will be wearing in years to come!

But first time to reflect on my 'carry-on' style. You see my arrival at LFW was somewhat last minute and unexpected as my LFW pass only arrived days before I was due to leave and I was working some ridiculous 14 hour days in the run-up to my departure... therefore I had very little time to put together outfits and was simply carrying on luggage! So my style was easy-chic and pretty much what I had worn on the plane the night before.

While scurrying across the Somerset cobblestones on my way to my first show I was approached by a camera and presenter from some fashion TV; the presenter was doing a vlog (video blog) on street style and asked me to describe my outfit and overall look. This is a question I get asked a lot in interviews and my answer is pretty much always the same.

So here I am day 3 of London Fashion Week (photo taken by the lovely Haruki Horikiwa at http://www.changefashion.net/) ; Jacket by Zara, leopard print Tshirt by Reiss, Belt by Reiss, Half-leather leggings by NeverMind (that’s the name of the label…not me being rude!), wedges by River Island and bag by Tescos…yes, Tescos! I had a bit of a cringey moment when I had to tell her it was only 9euro… but then I realised actually Supermarket Chic is the way forward and the presenter seemed mightily impressed that my gold faux snakeskin bag was literally as cheap as a MacDonalds extra large meal.

My rings are an assortment - Oasis, Awear and Vintage. I like that pile-em-all-on look... plus pretty handy in case anyone tried to rob me. My punch would be lethal!

As mentioned before my beloved wedges from River Island... Soooo comfy and so easy to wear with pretty much everything in my wardrobe! An investment piece for sure... although they are coming in a leopard print too... and I am more than tempted!

Okay that's enough about me... onto the shows!

Arnotts A/W Fashion Show Review

Arnotts has become one of my new favourite haunts over the past few months. They have completely revamped their womenswear department on the mezzanine floor by stocking new and exclusive brands like Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Reiss, Boutique by Jaeger and new labels Nevermind and One Teaspoon which are a favourite of mine. It has really upped the ante in the style stakes and with this new insertion of young and funky labels it has begun to compete with edgier stores like BT2 and is finally making Henry Street a worthwhile shopping destination!

I happily headed along to the A/W Arnotts fashion show last week that was held on the top floor in the Conran Shop. Under first impressions the layout was intimate and fun; each chair was a different style - which was a nod at the new boutique-style womenswear department and the eclectic selection we were about to see!

The catwalk opened with an introduction to this season’s hottest colours: camel and red with touches of leopard print. My favourite look from the catwalk was this Hobbs camel coat and Coast red belted dress with the Abro leopard-print bag. Assets Model Lynn looks prim and office perfect in this tailored look!

Statement coats are absolutely huge this season, as seen on the catwalks of Dior, Tommy Hilfiger, Alberta Ferreti and almost every other designer. Well stylist of the show Jan Brierton dedicated a whole segment of the show just to coats, to showcase how outerwear can be an entire outfit!

Without a doubt this pink and red plaid Anglomania by Vivienne Westwood coat as worn by Baiba is the perfect vibrant option to let you stand out of a crowd.

Heritage Fabrics were also huge on the designer catwalks this season, layering countryside colours and outdoorsy prints with structured tailoring was big at Rodarte, Chanel, Jaeger London and Kenzo. Well Arnotts was no different; showcasing various looks from the new Hobbs diffusion line NW3, Max & co and of course the Lauren by Ralph Lauren collection. Here we see the gorgeous Sarah Morrisey in one of the coveted Hertitage looks.

Other show segments included; ‘Knits’, showcasing this season’s coolest knitwear just like Marc Jacobs and D+G collections. ‘Glam Military’, ‘Clean Lines’ with suiting and silhouette enhancing outfits and finally ‘Hitchcock Glamour’, showing that elegance of the forties and with inspiration taken from the leading ladies of the Hitchcock era such as Grace Kelly.

It was a show that catered for every age group with an emphasis on dressing the female form, most importantly - there was something for everyone! I have already bought the half-leather/half-trousers from ‘Nevermind’ collection and even got papped at London Fashion Week while wearing them. Next on my wishlist is an Abro leopard print bag and patent black belt from Hobbs.

Awear Fashion Blogger

Cyber Style

ASOS recently launched a competition to find a new street style blogger, unfortunately I think you had to live in the UK to enter, but the entry blog idea did get me thinking... what is my favorite fashion discovery???

The Internet has been the cyber portal that has allowed me to extend my knowledge and passion in the crazy world that is fashion! It has given me the opportunity to travel to numerous countries around the globe, sit front row at fashion shows, get up close and personal with my style icons, people-watch and most importantly shop till I drop – which is why, I believe that the Internet is my greatest fashion discovery!

Without the hassle of paying ridiculous luggage charges and waiting in long airport queues, at the click of a button I have travelled to places like Paris, Tokyo, New York and Milan.

Paris; the city where Coco Chanel’s fashion legacy remains visible on the street, has now been influenced by stars like Clemence Poesy and Vanessa Paradis with their bohemian trademark style. This polished French look, combined with a more nonchalant thrown-together ethos, has been snapped outside many fashion shows, on the streets and seen on fashion blogs worldwide. These images from ‘The Sartorialist’ taken at Paris Fashion Week epitomise this evolved style. The girl above is rocking the sports luxe trend by wearing what seems to be jogging pants, teamed with graphic heels, caramel-tinted shades and an oversized fur coat that screams ‘look at me’ for all the right reasons.

In total antithesis to the Parisian style – we have the birthplace of cutting edge Japanese fashion, the Harajuku district in Tokyo! With their weird and wacky combination of high-end designers with makeshift outfits held together with safety pins and bizarre cartoon-embellished accessories, they have a style unique to themselves.

What caught my eye about this girl was that although her outfit is almost comical at first glance, the undertone of her outfit is actually bang on trend! With Spring/Summer’s hottest trend of clashing prints – as seen on the catwalks of Proenza Schouler, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Eley Kishimoto - this girl mixes it up by clashing her leopard print and bold floral design. While the acid wash denim gilet gives us a flashback to the 80’s trend.

There is also an element of fashion forward style; with the hint of animal print and the 70's style awkward length skirt which is halfway between the knee and calf… both set to be big news in the style stakes this Autumn/Winter! Only in my wildest dreams could I walk down the high-street with such luminosity and creativity!

For us mere mortals getting one of the coveted tickets to a show at London, New York, Paris or Milan fashion week is next to impossible; but thanks to the internet I had the amazing experience of sitting front row at Alexander McQueen’s glorious last show! The reptile-patterned and digitally printed dresses brought McQueen’s aptly named collection ‘Plato's Atlantis’ to an entirely new level, and the bizarre yet magnificent armadillo-style shoes were his most elaborate to date. Had it not been for the Internet video I would never have witnessed the spectacle that was McQueen’s greatest show. The illuminated runway, giant dancing robot cameras going up and down the catwalk and the model army marching like an alien invasion on the world of fashion!

The greatest online invention in my opinion is the no fuss, no hassle, no queuing, no searching for your size genius that is internet shopping!
I am the type of girl who goes into a shop and buys whatever tickles my fancy in my size, but I will very rarely try anything on. My intense dislike for crowds and fitting rooms has only made my love for online shopping blossom. The best part is, I can buy my favourite labels that aren’t readily available, such as Carven, Preen and Carin Wester.

Street Style blogs are one of the greatest online phenomena of the past decade. They have become a core reference tool for fashion houses, designers, fashion students and fashionistas alike!

A fashion blog where the blogger takes pictures of himself or herself is also a new and interesting outlet for fashionistas. It is a glimpse inside the wardrobe of a style obsessor and an insight into what is essentially someone’s online visual diary, where they ponder their individual stylish moments and lust haves!

I browse these blogs to morph aspects of their looks into my own wardrobe… but most of the time I just admire and wishing I could pull off what they are wearing!

The Internet also fuels my obsession with all things celebrity. No longer do I have to wait for my weekly magazines to see who is wearing what, who is wearing who and who wore it best. Now I can have a daily update on celebrity styles and even better - with the help of asos.com I can now achieve a copy-cat style of my favourite celebrity looks at a fraction of the price! This image of Victoria Beckham was the moment that she truly transformed from a pouty, wag, fashion wannabe to true style icon. This un-characteristically casual Victoria sent fashion pulses racing around the worldwide blogosphere - I am loving the slouchy hareem pants in forest green teamed with her oversized blazer, slightly dishevelled up-do hairstyle and signature sunglasses, this time in trendy aviators instead of her usual bug-eyed trademark style. Top marks for Miss B.

Without the Internet, my love and knowledge of all things fashionable would most certainly be hindered; my wardrobe would be severely lacking in style and substance and my creative vision would without doubt be stifled through lack of inspiration!

The word Couture tends to make me weak at the knees! I love nothing more than to sit at my computer watching style.com couture shows (some day I’ll be front row) where extravagance and opulence are the norm. Bum-bags are back!!!!

The last time I wore a bum-bag was actually only last year… as part of a Tomb Raider Halloween costume, I had a leather bum-bag to give the look a utility vibe. And it was actually the best thing ever…it reminded me how annoying handbags, clutches and purses are. I didn’t have to worry about losing my phone, money, make-up or keys…all were compactly and safely secured to my body! It left my hands and arms free to dance (badly) throughout the night.

So why is there such a faux-pas stigma against these little gems? Well for years now, they have always been associated with naff tourists on holidays, in grotesque prints and overly neon-bright colours. I have flashbacks of my Mum having a bright yellow one with black exposed zips and my sister with an luminous Simpson’s version.

No longer just made in tacky polyester…designers have given the bum-bag a whole new sophisticated chic. Over at Louis Vuitton, designed by Marc Jacobs, the bum bag has taken a luxe turn. In embossed leather complete with tassels and fur trimmings…even uber cool fashion follower Rihanna has been seen sporting this design out! Brit bag designer Angel Jackson, who has her bags for sale on fashion website ASOS, has brought out a gorgeous python skin bum-bag, which surprisingly enough I am lusting after! And newcomer to the design world Ashish sent his models down the catwalk at London Fashion Week with his sexier bum-bag versions, with studded detailing teamed with cut-away body-con dresses.
Surprisingly enough, the High Street has taken this trend on…and there are cool versions popping up everywhere. Marks & Spencer will launch a studded leather-effect version in May, while American Apparel offers extreme ‘80s’ shiny gold and blue versions. River Island has the most wearable version, in my opinion, with grungy black leather adorned with triangular-shaped studs coming into stores thus Spring, while Penneys currently have their versions in stock…actually ahead of the fashion pack for once, in leather-look black and white options.

Well this ‘90s’ icon has come back with a bang this season, and although there was a mini-revival of the bum-bag by Louis Vuitton a few years back, it never really caught on despite SATC’s ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ endorsing it. It proves that not everything she touches turns to gold, which leads me to think that this new revival may also be short-lived.

I cannot deny their convenience and I may even invest in a cheap one for the festivals this summer - it’s certainly here for the short term on a crazy fashion whim so why not indulge this spring and make like Mr. Motivator.

D-D-D-D-ouble Denim

It was one of the most cringe worthy fashion moments of the 90’s when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake turned up on the red carpet in matching denim outfits. But who was to know that they would become the muses and inspiration behind the top design houses for Spring/Summer 2010…Double denim is back with a bang, yes, wearing head to toe denim is now actually acceptable. Attempted originally in the 80’s, where permed hair was also acceptable, then reprised by the aforementioned tween pop stars and now finally hitting the catwalk and every magazine as the hottest trend of the season!

D+G, House of Holland, Chloe, Ralph Lauren, Jeremy Scott, all have the denim-on-denim done to perfection! Denim jackets teamed with jeans, skirts, dresses and even hats. But the best part of this trend is the re-invention of this classic all-American original was denim into jumpsuits, dresses and even suits.

House of Holland took denim to a new level with looks inspired by bondage and suiting, while Chloe attempted a daring dolly look with denim patchwork. Chambray seemed to be the denim colour of the season which is a lighter than light denim-wash… this was seen on the Jeremy Scott models, while Ralph Lauren and D+G kept it retro classic with almost cowboy country inspired looks. Lauren kept his American cool vibe he has every season, while D+G spiced up the generally casual fabric with detailing like ruffles on denim dresses and skirts and showing flashes of skin.

So how can we get away with this tricky trend off the catwalk? Well, if wearing the same tone denims in one outfit like Jeremy Scott, then break it up with colourful or tan accessories, like a belt or jewellery. Another way to wear this look is to mix up the denims with different washes, dark, light, chambray etc.

And if you are still unsure about this look, why not opt for the safer version and wear coloured denim jeans like white or peach, and team with a plain denim jacket! At least that way it isn’t as obvious and you are easing your way into the trend.

The Dark Prince of Fashion

The fashion world has lost it’s true visionary. News of Alexander McQueen’s sudden death yesterday (11th Feb 2010) at his London home has sent shock-waves through the industry, as New York Fashion week began, instead of celebrating the new creative talents, we were mourning the loss of fashion’s Dark Prince. No doubt it will be a long time before someone of his innovative and creative ability steps into the limelight again.

Lee McQueen as he was known began his career in fashion at the early age of 16. He learned his craft as an apprentice in Savile Row and it was this early on that we got a glimpse of his twisted and naughty nature, when he revealed in an interview that he sewed ‘I am a cunt’ into the lining of a coat made for Prince Charles.

He then went on to graduate with a masters in fashion design form the prestigious Central Saint Martins College and revealed at his debut show his unique, raw vision that we know and love today. His designs caught the eye of Isabella Blow, an aristocratic British eccentric and former editor of British Tatler who became his mentor and bought his entire first collection.

His work evolved into that of a true artist, taking his inspiration from nature and death, using predatory birds and lethal snakes to influence his designs. His work, however extreme in design, was always skillfully crafted using his early tailoring experiences and managed to have a romantic softness even in their bizarreness. His families Scottish Heritage also had an impact on his imaginative designs and he showed tartan, kilts and feathers in a whole new light in his work! His designs were always fantastical and theatrical...which made him stand out amongst any other designer of his time.

Lee was made the head designer for Givenchy in 1996 but was then was poached by the Gucci group, which supported and developed his own label, Alexander McQueen. His label has gone from strength to strength and had even opened up his own stores in London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas. He unsurprisingly won British Designer of Year 4 times throughout his career, and his fashion shows are the one spectacle that will be sorely missed on the fashion circuit as he was known for his extravagant displays of showmanship.

His most recent show for S/S 2010 was his most brilliant to date…a collaboration with friend Lady gaga previewing her bad romance video while the models tottered down the catwalk in the now infamous mythological hoof-style shoes (see ‘extreme fashionistas’ article). The unique graphic-print designs from this collection were a combination of bug and beast influences, the bright colours remind me of when you would make those butterfly prints as a child where you would splodge paint on paper and then fold it to create a beautiful print. It is mesmerizing to watch what he puts down the catwalk every season, and it is deeply saddening to know there will be no more! No doubt his last ever collection will at some stage brace the catwalk in a final tribute to the influential designer.

Alexander McQueen was a designer like no other, he pushed the creative and artistic boundaries and truly made his mark in fashion history. RIP.

The Bare Necessities...

Ever since Madonna donned her Dolce and Gabbana cone bra, or Carrie Bradshaw swanned around NYC in what was debatably lingerie a lot of the time, the female nation (and of course male nation too) have been obsessed with lingerie on display! So it’s no wonder that Dior’s Couture and Summer Collections are influenced largely by the delicate design of lingerie.

The Dior Couture Show Winter 2009 was originally inspired by the old photographs of Christian Dior dressing his models in the traditional French salon, where he previewed the collection to his clients. This is where the half-dressed effect came about; the couture collection has flashes of corsets, stockings, bras and knickers, and although there is a distinct 1950s’ style to the clothing, he brings the exposing of garments through in a very contemporary way.

He also brought this lingerie inspiration through to his ready-to-wear Spring/Summer collection; it is in a much more subtle way, with delicate sheer fabrics, deep silks resembling nightwear slips and lots of lace.

Other designers were more suggestive in their influences, with corset detailing appearing on tops, sheer fabrics and laces adorning many outfits and subtle flashes of flesh. The short shorts or high waited pants returned to the catwalk too this season, showing that it’s not only Lady Gaga trumping this look!

Celebrities like Daisy Lowe, Sienna Miller and Taylor Momsen are the people leading this trend off the catwalk! Taylor Momsen’s style is very grungy/heroin chic and just like Blondie back in the ‘80s she is championing this half-dressed, rolled-out of bed look… whenever she is performing, she is wearing some sort of underwear as outerwear or vintage slip dress. Some celebrities who have been channeling this underwear outerwear look for the past few years in the worst possible way would be Jodie Marsh and Katie Price…whatever you do, do not copy their attempts!

So what about us real women…will I get sniggers and jeers if I go to my local pub in a cropped brasserie worn with my jeans, or my bra showing through a sheer top? Well I can assure you that, no, I didn’t walk out of my house in a bra. There is a very fine line between what is acceptable and what is not…looking like an extra from ‘Pretty Woman’ is not!!! However, there are ways for you to infuse this trend into your wardrobe. Try layering; wear a cropped brassiere like the ones available in Topshop under a sheer or lacy bra, or for those of you a little less adventurous, you can do this same look with a bodysuit under, so there is no flesh on display.

Go for a lacy body suit for extra lingerie effect! I have seen some gorgeous young girls doing the crop top style with high-waisted trousers, and hey if you have the body and confidence to do this, go for it! I don’t think I’ll be recommending wearing knickers out to anyone though…even former style-setter Sienna couldn’t get away with that look!

Awear = A+

If you could give grades for fashion brands it’d be fantastic… points depending on style, trends, quality and, of course, price! Well, I was at the Awear Press Day last week and all I can say is the new Spring/Summer line ticked every box.

I remember back when I was in school and my mum shopped in Awear…it was slightly less trendy, always approachable and affordable, but rarely a fashionista’s first port of call! Well how times have changed - it seems in the past 8 years Awear has been giving top British brands like Topshop and River Island a run for their money and has become top of the fashion leaderboard.

This Spring is going to be a delightful array of nudes and peaches and pinks…just imagine rummaging through a ballet dancer’s trunk of goodies and hey presto. My favourite piece from the ‘Dakota’ collection has to be the stunning layered tutu-inspired skirt… toughen the look up with a cool t-shirt, denim shirt opened and flat leather boots to go for the glunge look. Or for those of you Carrie lovers…channel the opening Sex and the City credits and wear with a simple nude bodysuit underneath!

Another theme Awear is doing is the new take on last year’s military trend…a combination of utility and ethnic warrior. My must-have from this collection has to be the ultra-gorge green playsuit with ruffle detail…team with boyfriend cardi, over-sized shades and flat sandals or boots for daytime chic or go glam at night with chunky gold accessories and killer heels.

For high summer expect Miami Vice meets Cocacabana…the vivid collection is a refreshing surprise among a season so full of pastels. An array of bright and colourful dresses and individual pieces that will have you feeling like you’re on holiday even if you’re stuck in dull old Ireland. Channel Halston in these layered chiffon dreams that Nicole Ritchie and Rachel Zoe would ‘just die’ for. But your just gonna have to wait in high anticipation until June/July to get your hands on these gems. I have already put in a request for a long purple and blue maxi dress that usually I would consider too girly…but I’ve fallen in love!

And for my star buy of the season it has to be this strapless number… the neutral blush tone works perfectly with the uber soft, faux suede material, and the cut of the fabric gives the leather a new feminine look. Taking inspiration from the likes of Philip Lim and Hermes who gave leathers a much softer look for the Spring/Summer season, Awear’s new take on the must-have little leather dress from last season is ultra-girly, ultra-soft and ultra-wearable. You don’t need to be Angelina Jolie to get leather clad in this little number.

Golden Globes Goodies... and baddies!

Under my Umbrella, ella, ella, eh eh could have been the song of the night at The Golden Globes 2010, the rain just didn’t stop…but that didn’t prevent our stars from gracing the red carpet in style!

Globe Goodies…

Christina Hendricks (of Mad Men fame) looked sensational! She was waving the flag for all curvilicious women out there! There are some old rules about dressing bigger frames, like stay away from volume and always dress in darker colours…well, Hendricks threw caution to the wind and wore a dress in a peachy champagne colour with extreme cascading ruffles…and she looked stunning in it! To top it all off, she was supporting young designer and project runway winner Christian Siriano.

The Brit star that seems to have taken over Keira Knightley’s former crown is Emily Blunt. She looked delicious in a rose pink tulle and chiffon strapless gown with ruffle detail by Dolce & Gabbana. It was delicate and effortless compared to some of the over-done American stars!

The romantic trend is one of the biggest of Spring/Summer season and Emily wasn’t the only star rocking this floaty trend. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elisabetta (George Clooney’s latest arm candy), Chloe Sevigny and Heidi Klum all followed this sweet fairytale look.

Fergie, who was a pleasant surprise on the night, looked like a Grecian goddess in an Elie Saab chiffon gown, again following one of the bigger colour trends of the season in a lilac colour, with a crystal embellished waistline and ruched skirt. She looked like a movie star with softer hair and make-up and has shunned that vivacious popstar look she is known so well for.

Some will absolutely hate Drew Barrymore’s dress…and I can see why! But being a fashion fiend, I have to love it, I do! I love sparkle, I love figure-hugging silk, I love the champagne colour, I love the embellishment and I love Atelier Versace… I just didn’t love them all on this dress! I also don’t know if I liked the clusters of sparkle embellishment block on her hip…why, oh why, would anyone want to add inches there? But she gets on the best-dressed list purely for old-school glamour effort.

The undecided…

Kruger is always a fashion risk-taker, which I can commend; however, I still haven’t made my mind up to whether I love it or loathe it! The tie-dye mixed pink Christian Lacroix dress she wore was a little too couture for the red carpet. I love Kate Hudson, and I love Marchesa Just as much…so I felt bad about putting the two of them, on this list! Maybe it was the bad weather that made this frock look out of place? However, the white, origami structural-inspired creation by Marchesa just didn’t completely win me over! But like I said, it’s Kate Hudson who is gorgeous no matter what she wears!

Sandra Bullock, what can I say! Colour… gorgeous, shape and fabric…disgusting. Basically, she looked like a ‘Quality Street’ wrapper! Not good, Miss Congeniality, not good!

Lea Michele…the star of the new hit cult show Glee did look stunning at her first Globes show, but there is still something a bit off about her outfit. Oscar de la Renta is known for his dramatic dresses, and although it is a stunning dress, I think it drowned out her tiny frame. Perhaps this dress would have looked better on someone with fair features and taller frame, Cameron Diaz for example!

Another star who usually always gets top marks for red carpet style is House actress Olivia Wilde. But her black and silver Gucci shimmery gown reminded me of a ‘90s’ Mariah Carey. The dress was exciting with a daring neckline and subtle draping. But the fabric cheapened the look a bit, which is why I am unconvinced.

Golden Grossness…

Light grey hues is a big colour trend for Spring/Summer…Patricia Arquette shows us how not to wear this colour! Her dress, made mostly of a dingy, grey flowy fabric, had a bizarre subtle animal print on it, and underneath was a gross metallic underlay. The criss-cross detail just made her look bigger than she is…a grey hot mess!

Penelope Cruz is not one to usually be on a worst-dressed list…however, borrowing a dress from Mortisha Adams wardobe is just never a good idea. Firstly, black on a red carpet is always a little too safe…so it would want to be an amazing dress. The mermaid style dress was over-fussy and the lace detailing was just too mumsy and totally lacked any of her natural sex appeal. She should have picked up some style tips while modelling for Spanish label Mango.

Another Mad Men star, Elisabeth Moss, looked like she was channeling Wendy from Peter Pan. The strapless, pastel-blue empire dress looked more a vintage nightie than a red-carpet dress and made her look frumpy, while the long necklace looked cheap and didn’t even suit the style of the dress. She gets points for on-trend pastel colour but that is it!

Dear, oh dear, there is not one positive thing I can say about Julianne Moore’s dress. It was shapeless like a bag of potatoes, an awfully dull and dark shade of grey (yes it is one of the IT colours of the season…but you got the wrong grey!!!) And then to top it all off, she had a fur trimming along the top that drooped down on her arms. I’m not even going to tell you who designed it, it’s that awful.

Ben De Lisi .. It's the Principle!

Those of you Project Catwalk fans will know Ben De Lisi as the charming and slightly annoying designers’ mentor. But for those of you who don’t know, he is also one of Britain’s best loved and most esteemed eveningwear designers! Ben designs a diffusion line in conjunction with Debenhams called BDL by Ben de Lisi, which has become one of the largest selling ranges under their Designers at Debenhams umbrella.

Well now Ben takes on his biggest challenge yet… he has become the head designer for Principles, and brings the British Highstreet brand back to its former glory with its new release early February at Debenhams. He has created a 106-piece collection for Principles specifically targeted at the 40+ woman. The collection focuses on well-tailored cuts, beautiful fabrics and flattering shapes and includes designs for weekend, smart day, occasion and evening wear, together with handbags and accessories. Ben de Lisi spoke up for the brand,

"I’m thrilled to be putting my name to and working on this new collection. It is aimed at the cultured, modern contemporary woman who has an eye for quality, cut and luxury. I just know it won’t disappoint,”

Ben de Lisi’s finest moment in fashion was when he made world headlines with the scarlet, one-shoulder gown Kate Winslet wore at the Oscars in 2002. He hopes to return Principles as one of the big sellers on the fashion market, and since there is a niche in the market for dressing the more mature ladies, it is sure to be a huge success.

From Fashion Faux pas to Fashion Forward!

You may have once cringed at the sight of your dad wearing his socks under his sandals on holidays…you may still actually! But little did we know that dear daddy would become a muse for many of the top fashion houses for 2009 and 2010. Top labels like Galliano, Burberry, Dior, Chloe and Alexander Wang featured the sock and sandal look in their catwalk collections. However, for a look considered typically preppy, Wang was the only one in my opinion, who managed to keep his cool edgy stamp on it with patent black leather shoes or animal prints and chunky knee highs with an almost mens gater-like effect on the back!

So what celebrities have already caught onto this craze??? Well, fictional fashion darling Blair Waldorf has been known to channel this preppy look, while her alter ego Leighton Meester also has been known to take a few fashion risks on the red carpet and was seen at an event rocking the new style statement!

Then we have your typical quirky dressers like Fearne Cotton, Chloe Sevigny, Agyness Deyn and of course Kate Moss who have all been attempting this look over the past year! Some even before the designers brought out their collections, so perhaps it was them that inspired the design houses and not our dad's bad taste?

So how can you attempt this look without looking like a 6-year old girl? Team with bare legs and short little dresses for a sexy evening look. Be selective in your style, not any old pair of socks will do (leave the grubby, old ones in the bottom of your sock drawer)… try Topshop, Oasis and Falke for the best selections. Topshop have great little gold and silver glittery socks, which are perfect for this type of look!

If you don’t like the look of the peep toes with socks, why not try pop socks (although this is a look best left to when the weather warms up a bit!) Or try the Wang look and toughen simple sandals with ribbed men's army socks.. you might want to buy a new pair and not borrow your dads old ones…yuck!.

So get socky…there are so many different choices… go hard with chunky socks, sweet and innocent with ankle socks, quirky and stylish with knee highs or sassy and sexy with thigh highs...the sock world is your oyster!

Armani Advert Revealed!

It has finally arrived…the much-anticipated campaign for Armani featuring Megan Fox!
Ever since we heard Victoria Beckham had been shunned in favour of a younger, hotter version, you could already imagine all the females worldwide sighing and instantly signing up to the gym or starting that fad diet!

Well, I have to say all that worry was for nothing...okay granted she is still and always will be a complete hottie, there is no denying that! But to be honest, I found Victoria Beckham’s advert way sexier and more alluring and more dynamic. Maybe it was the fact that I wasn’t expecting such sensuality from Vicki B, and I expected way more from Megan Fox, the photos are bland are extremely unexciting! Either way I am not impressed with the photos which were shot by renowned fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who also shot Victoria’s campaign!

Not only that, but Eva Mendes, who is the same age as Victoria Beckham, is the face and body for Calvin Klein jeans and underwear…and her advert is also a lot more exotic and racy…she is 12 years older than Megan! So why was Victoria replaced? Well, Georgio Armani stands by his new model, claiming that "Megan is young and sexy and has a lot of spirit," and that "Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans are all about a youthful attitude, making her the perfect choice for the collections." In my opinion, Megan needs to step up her game before some older, more experienced woman comes along and snatches her new crown!

But no doubt the lingerie will still sell out, and men will be crashing their cars accidentally while staring at her giant billboards!

Nine Naughties...

First there was Moulin Rouge, then Chicago … and now the movie musical ‘Nine’ is set to become the next big thing. The movie is based in Venice in the early 1960’s, around celebrated film director Guido Contini, who despite all his successes is encountering a midlife crisis as he approaches his 40th birthday. The film shows him in an emotional journey as he tries to gain back his creativity, entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties.

The fashion world are hailing Marc Jacobs an innovative genius for introducing the bunny ears to the fashion world… but they’ve been around for a long time, so where exactly did he get his inspiration from? There is of course the infamous playboy bunny costume introduced by Hugh Hefner in the 1950’s and instantly associates bunny ears with sex appeal. Then of course there is the return of the Cadbury’s Caramel Bunny who’s new look and dress was designed by Top Brit Designer Giles Deacon this year.

It is also being debated whether Maison Michel came up with the idea first or not? He had made lace headpieces of bunny ears and mouse ears too, and Marc admittedly came across the idea accidently when he saw someone with a large ribbon in their hair resembling ears.. So when Marc Jacobs’ Fall collection for Louis Vuitton came out this year, and his models paraded the catwalk with bunny ears, was this fashion history in the making or a copycat idea?

Regardless of who thought it up first, as usual, celebrities are the first to take on this outlandish trend, no shocks that Lady Gaga and Madonna were one of the firsts to wear them in public. But now uber cool Olsen twins and singer Lily Allen have been seen taking on the trend too.

I do think this look is actually really cute…but I really can’t see myself walking down Grafton street donning a pair of animal ears just yet? However, I also remember everyone initially laughing at leggings, skinny jeans, shoulder pads and structured skirts so maybe, just maybe this too will become known as “wearable”. Topshop have already begun to challenge the trend and have come up with their very own versions of slightly smaller headbands, so a little more normal, but I am still yet to see anyone actually wear them!

Cheryl's Mini Makeover!

Finally Cheryl Cole has gotten rid of those hair extensions and has given herself a mini fashion makeover. Gone (hopefully) are the days of the Xfactor live shows where she tried too hard to be on trend and uber -stylish, or that hideous mesh frock disaster she wore for her birthday! Gross!! She’s now a chart-topping, solo artist and deserves a new look away from tacky pop princess, this new look is more sophisticated and polished…but still keeps her young, fresh and sexy! Go Chezza!

Out at the weekend for a Gary Barlow bash she wore a gorgeous body-con Julien MacDonald colour-block dress, teaming it with a chunky Malene Birger Necklace and her new shaggy crop! What I love about this look is the muted colours (a nice change from her usual eye-popping colours), extreme structured shoulders and sheer sleeve detail...she looks delish!

Mark fast is fast (sorry) becoming one of the London fashion packs newest darling!

He hit headlines during London Fashion week for stepping up against the skinny nation and booking 3 plus sized models to sashay down the catwalk in his figure hugging, no holds barred creations. The fashion world went into uproar and his creative stylist quit just days before his collection was to be seen on the catwalk. But that hasn’t stopped this Central Saint Martins Graduate from becoming the next big thing!

Mark’s style of clothing is gothic elegance and he describes collection for Spring/Summer 2009 as “Pseudo-metallic knitted body armour”. With young singers like Cassie and Nicola Roberts championing his designs…we are sure to see this up and coming designer dressing even bigger stars in the near future. Rumour has it that he has been in talks to design a line for Topshop…following in the footsteps of designers like Ashish, Preen, Barbara Hulanicki and more recently Christopher Kane…so you better start saving!

To me he is the new Herve Leger…his dresses shape the body like a second skin…the designs are equally sexy but they have this edge and softness that keep it young and hip! He has brought knitting to a whole new dimension…no longer shall it be associated with little old grannies and their knitting needles. Goodbye wooly hats and twin-sets…knitwear is now officially sexy!

My new style crush...Zoe Kravitz

Well with parents like the super stylish Lenny Kravitz and beautifully eclectic Lisa Bonet, this girl not only had great genes to start with, but also two of the best wardrobes to raid.

You can see the influence of her parents’ styles in how she dresses, she’s part grungy rocker, part free spirited hippy. She has this fantastic eclectic look and devil-may-care attitude that looks like she just jumped out of bed and threw on whatever she found on the floor… and maybe she did!

Having just turned 21, she still keeps her makeup young and fresh, occasionally opting for a bright red lip, but in general quite reserved with her makeup. Her hair is usually left long and naturally wavy, however she recently took the fashionista plunge and chopped it off into a shaggy crop…not many people could pull that look off (I certainly would never attempt it) but she looks even better than before.

Some of my favourite looks are those of her caught shopping or walking around New York City, effortless and cool. Some vintage denims, plain tshirts, layered cardigans. My type of girl! However even for events, she follows the dress codes while managing to stay true to herself. See her at the Chanel A/W 09’ show wearing the Chanel monochrome tights and dress. She keeps it her own by layering lots of necklaces, unstyled hair, shades and a cool beret.

Another reason to love Zoe…her best friend is none other than Alexander Wang…yes, these two seem inseparable at events and the lucky girl gets to constantly wear his designs! Jealous much?! See them here at an after-party…she makes chunky heels with an oversized red hoody look good. And then of course wearing a Wang original at the Vogue fashion funds party. Grrrr. And i'm clearly not the only one who loves Zoe, she's also the new face of Vera Wang's Princess Fragrance!

To pull off the Zoe Kravitz look you’ll need to invest in a few staples. Worn denims, plain vests and t-shirts, layered necklaces, headbands, scarves and vintage jewellery, flat boots, …a best friend called Alexander Wang and oh I dunno, a bank balance as big as hers too?

'IT' Designer of the Future... David Koma

Cheryl Cole, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Megan Fox are all fans of fashion newbie David Koma, and although he’s been taking a lot of stick in the media industry about his quirky designs, he must be doing something right if all these famous fashionistas have been taking notice.

David graduated last year from the MA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins and his first ever collection to go down the catwalk is the S/S 2010. One design now infamously donned the “CD dress”, which Cheryl Cole got slated for wearing on Xfactor.

He has given his own unique spin to the tribal and futuristic trend that a lot of designers were influenced by this season. A collection that is clearly not for the wallflowers, and is refreshingly not mainstream! His designs are injected with bright oranges and hot pinks, eclectic patterns and interesting embellishments that for once aren’t sequins, but he certainly must have a fan-base other than style-conscious celebrities, as fashion store Browns have now started stocking the young designers collection. So if you feel like taking a walk on the wild side, why not invest in a little Koma and stand out from the crowd!

Kinky Couture … Naughty, but oh so nice!

Those of you loving the Cheryl Cole 'Fight for this Love' video costumes are in for a treat… I have found where to get the dangerously sexy, spiked corset…and it will only set you back around 4000euro! The lethally embellished corset has 2-inch metal spikes and a plethora of studs, but the detail is all handmade with tender loving care…hence the hefty price-tag.

This corset is one part of the new Couture line launched by the sensual and sexy lingerie label Agent Provocateur. The line named “Soiree” has been described as the “ultimate luxury fantasy”. Other pieces available to buy (if you get on the very long waiting list) are a barely there “nipple cap” ensemble featuring strands of Swarovski crystals, while another all-in-one ensemble seemed to be made entirely of leather straps and metal studs.

Although the new line does also cater for those with less adventurous taste, with classic 40’s inspired 3-piece lace sets, pussy-bow neckties and cape details for a cuter look …it was definitely the raunchy sets that has got people talking! Perfect for those with a kinky tendency in the bedroom, this line of leather, studs, corsets and spikes won’t disappoint!

Okay so before I start getting hate mail…I too love Twilight blah blah blah! However, recently I have been seeing more and more pictures of Kristen Stewart looking gorgeously stylish…now usually this wouldn’t annoy me…except for the fact that everytime she is interviewed and asked about her style she plays along all nonchalant and claims she isn’t interested in fashion or trends!

Granted she has a stylist that makes her look this good…but if you have no interest in fashion…why bother having a stylist? If she is as uninterested as she claims, why not just wear jeans and a t-shirt to these red carpet events? Okay so there is the slight possibility that film exec bosses are telling her to look different while promoting the film, and maybe they hired the stylist…but she doesn’t seem like the type to just roll over and do what people tell her. Which is why I have come to the conclusion that Kristen Stewart is a closet fashion fanatic.

Look 1) Kristen opted for a sheer leather dress by the Olsen twins line ‘Elizabeth and James’ for her Madrid presscall and finished her look with a pair of lust-worthy Christian Louboutin heels.

Look 2) At the Teen choice awards, she rocked out in Rock and Republic ‘Roma’ dress with plunging neckline and spiked skirt detail, but toned it down by wearing a white wife-beater top underneath.

Look 3) The first time when Kristen really looked like she’d been styled over because gone was the rock-chick, laid back edginess, in its place was a sweet girly look. She stepped out in Paris in a pretty strapless frock by J.Mendel, very classic and innocent…not exactly what you’d expect from Kristen.

Look 4) At the UK Premiere screening, she opted for a cheeky look in a multi-coloured Proenza Schouler outfit. The bright colours were great against her porcelain skin and the super-short mini skirt kept her looking ultra-feminine with a twist.

Look 5) At the LA premiere, the actress took a glamorous turn in a strapless white tulle gown by Oscar de la Renta. She kept her trademark messy hair, pale skin and dark makeup, but couldn’t get away from the Cinderella-esque style… I guess even ‘tomboys’ want a fairytale in the end.

Look 6) Here was the dealbreaker for me…no “tomboy”, uninterested in style would ever agree to wear this very risqué sheer dress. The dress, Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2010was paired with Giuseppe Zanotti 'Cindy' ankle boots. It’s edgy and quirky but still sexy…don’t tell me that isn’t premeditated style missy!

Now don’t get me wrong Kristen, I’m loving the new look…but you can’t fool me,
so come on and fess up…you’re a fashion junkie just like the rest of us!

Death of the Killer Heel?

I recently read an article in the Sunday Times Style magazine saying that the killer high heel has had it’s day…and the return of the kitten heels and sensible flats were back! Being 5”2 and a serious shoe fanatic with a closet destined to rival imelda marcos I’d like to severly debate this issue.

There are a million and one reasons why the killer heel will never die…we look better in heels, we walk better in heels, we have better posture in heels…wearing heels has even been proven to tone your upper thighs, so technically we could say wearing heels is exercise! Not only that, but heels are prettier than other shoes… you are never going to be able to compare a pair of flats to a pair of 5inch sex bombs. No Way! Shoes instantly cheer girls up, it’s like a cheaper version of therapy (well almost cheaper)…I have the most amazing pair of Topshop shoes that are aptly name “the breakup shoes”. Then I once had a very traumatic experience in Gatwick airport where I almost wasn’t allowed through the gates (long story), so again a pair of snakeskin fuschia Kurt Geiger heels were purchased in duty free and instantly the tears went away! High heel shopping is my cure for everything…to eliminate high heels from fashion, is like eliminating anti-depressants from a chemist!

Now don’t get me wrong, when I’m working or on a shoot I wear flats…not even I can run up and down Grafton street in stilettos all day. But when the occasion calls (ie. every weekend night or event) it’s high heels every time!

I will continue to love certain designers for continually pushing the boundaries with high heel designs. Last season Rodarte’s leather thigh highs were to-die-for and this season it’s all about Alexander McQueen! His latest S/S 10’ line had the most remarkable pieces of art I’ve ever seen, almost mythological in style. It’s refreshingly creative. Okay I won’t be buying a pair anytime soon…but I guarantee Topshop or some other highstreet label will bring out a more wearable version and baby, I’ll be first in line!

European Music Awards female fashion WARS!

Katy Perry, queen of quirky, kept her more sensible side on display while walking the red carpet as host for the EMA’s. She dazzled crowds in a stunning blush Marchesa gown with black lace detailing and a sleek up-do. She did however let her hair down as soon as she got inside the venue and donned a variety of crazy outfits, including a cheeky tribute to boyfriend Russell Brand by wearing a bespoke burlesque West Ham lingerie style outfit. Then there was the homage to a twisted prom night, in a wacky Victor and Rold designed ball-gown that looked like it had been attacked by mice. And although she was certainly hitting all the unique factors, the on-going burlesque theme, inspired by popular German Musical Cabaret is going to be huge next season with a lot of designers following the underwear as outerwear trend.

Beyonce also had a few costume changes throughout the night, but my favourite was definitely her red carpet look, in a shimmering Atelier Versace pink number which was unbelievably stunning,. The detail on the dress was exquisitel and hugged her in all the right places, her disheveled, big bouncy hair was a perfect contrast to the sleek style of the dress. Top marks for Sasha Fierce.
Brit singing sensation Leona Lewis tried to be a bit more daring than her usual look…she went for a super luxe sequined harem pants with a matching corset by designer Vivienne Westwood. Even though Hareem pants are risky at the best of times, it still looked a little boring! She had all the ingredients for a wow-factor look; sequins, corset, harem and of course Vivienne Westwood… but it just didn’t deliver!

Is Shakira morphing into Mariah Carey? It certainly looks that way in this mini “almost there” shimmer dress and slicked back hair. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. She looked way cooler at the VMA’s wearing a Balmain quilted leather mini dress with over-the-knee boots. Stick to rock n roll, sexy Shakira…it’s way more ‘she wolf’!

Pint sized popstar Pixie Lott usually impresses me on the red carpet with her sweet and sassy take on fashion, but she looked over-groomed, and a tad boring in her Dolce and Gabbana mini-dress. The sparkly shoes get a nod though…very nice!

Only rocker Juliette Lewis could possibly pull off this ultra-androgynous look, red lippy, leather on leather, bakerboy cap, over trouser boots, gold gloves and embellished belt. I love it on her…she just wouldn’t look right in a little dress…this is so much better.

Lil Kim aint so lil anymore…oh dear god! What was she thinking? There’s shock tactics and then there is ridiculous…this is ridiculous! I really, really did not want to see all of that. Leather hotpants are just so wrong, I don’t even think Gisele could get away with wearing them (who am I kidding, of course she could)! However, the jacket is actually very nice (if her breasts weren’t popping out the front) it’s got that military vibe with the gold buttons and the embellished detail on the shoulders…very on trend…that is about the only thing right with this look though!

Pocahontas eat your heart out, here we have Bar Rafaeli wearing a fringed Cavalli creation from his Spring/Summer line. Initially at first glance I didn’t love this look…but actually the nude colour, layered metal chain belts, and cool fringing make her very fashion forward but still understated.

All in all, an eclectic bunch of fashionistas there…as usual some hits, some misses…but without the misses I’d have nothing to slag off…so lil Kim, keep doing what you do best and look like trash. Thanks.

The Monokini…Practical? No. Sexy? Yes.

“The cut out swimsuit is this summer’s hottest trend, and certainly one bikini trend that just screams sex appeal…but is it practical?”

One of the biggest shock trends of the summer is cut-out swimsuits…otherwise known as the monokini! When the monokini came back into the limelight a few years ago, many thought they were just a phase, with only the super thin and super famous like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton daring to bare …until now! That scandalous ’60s bathing suit is this season’s hottest swimwear silhouette, and everyone is wearing them. More revealing than the one piece, the monokini is being worn by sexy celebs like Kim Kardashian and Audrina Patridge to hide their negative bits but highlight their curves with strategically placed cutouts. Although you don’t have to have their bodies to pull off this tricky trend!

My favorite designer styles are this season’s bandage dressing, dare-to-bare swimsuits from Hervé Léger. They were a typical example of spring’s extreme cut-out, knock-em-dead pieces that appeared on the runways of Spring 2009. But there are endless high-street styles to choose from too, with a variety of styles on option for maximum appeal. But make sure that you purchase a monokini that you will feel comfortable in, that way you will be oozing confidence at the beach, and what is sexier than a confident woman in a swimsuit?

So yes, this season’s swimwear may have been made for posing and not so much for swimming, but I think practicality is overrated! The only real downfall to a monokini is the risk of odd or unflattering tan lines. My advice? Invest in a little fake tan to even out those crazy patches!
Fashion has never been about practicality! If it was, then Thierry Mugler, Alexander Mc Queen and John Galliono would not have jobs!

Victoria Beckham's Optical Illusion

Call her a style icon or a walking mannequin, love her or loathe her, there’s no denying that Victoria Beckham’s style statements always grab the headlines! Her most recent public outing in Milan was no different, she stepped out for dinner with David on Monday, in this €1,171.36 Alexander McQueen column dress. It’s a strange optical illusion, creating curves from one view, and making her look even thinner from other angles.
If you stare at this dress any longer than 30 seconds you will be hypnotized, the monochrome blurred lines make me feel dizzy.

Well Victoria Beckham must be doing something right, because the dress sold out on www.net-a-porter.com within 24hours of hitting the newsstands. You too can take inspiration from her look and buy monochrome this season...however you may have to take a few shots of absinthe to get the dizzy effect!

VIP Style Awards?!?

At the VIP Style Awards held in Dublin last week, Ireland’s best-loved TV personalities and socialites didn’t fail to impress. This is the one glamorous award ceremony where you can take risks, have fun with your outfits and channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw…and they did just that!

While standing together, the Xpose team looked like they jumped out of a box of Quality Street , but when flying solo they looked great, staying true to their individual styles and being adventurous!

The Xpose host Lorraine Keane was crowned Ireland's most stylish woman! Hmmm, don't know if I agree with that, given some of the awful outfits she wears on the show. However on the night she picked one of the hottest colours for spring and wore a deep purple number by bridal designer Tamen Michael, looking her ever glamorous and groomed self.

Aisling O’Loughlin won best dressed of the night, in this peacock inspired dress. I love the top bustier detail, but the tulle bottom is a little over the top! This dress would have been more show-stopping if it was cut just above the knee and made into a cocktail dress!

Although Karen Koster played it safe in a little black dress, she hit two key trends with popping-red, statement shoes (copies available in Topshop) and a one-shoulder detail on the dress.

Yvonne Keating looked stunning in a powder pink dress, with diamond-embellished belt detail and ruffle detailing on the neck and base of skirt. She and husband Ronan Keating won most stylish couple on the night and we can see why - she kept it classic and age-appropriate but had fun with a summery colour.

My personal winner of the night was Pippa O’Connor in a dazzling blue, empire line, and silk-chiffon gown. It was elegant with a twist, having the one-shoulder strap with embellished corsages on it, and keeping it stylish with smoky eyes, nude lips and a loose chignon bun and minimal silver jewellery.

But the worst dressed award goes to Miriam Ahern…she’s a cross between a flamenco dancer and big bird dyed black! The ruffles…dear god, all the ruffles, this lady needs a crash course on how to dress for your body type…yes black is slimming, but not with layers and layers of RUFFLES and detailing! One good thing she did was to accessorise with red lips and nails and a cute red diamond bangle. (But that’s the only compliment she’s getting).

Loveable Paula Abdul from American Idol, has never exactly been top of the style polls! But she at least manages to look half decent on the show (the miracle work of a stylist)... however if you caught any of her reality tv programme, you'd see that unfortunately she likes to dress herself for red-carpet events! Bad move Paula, seriously bad move!

She recently wore a floor-length, flowing, canary yellow gown with jewlled detailing to the Grammys! Sounds stunning right??? Well check out this hot mess! (Photo to right) There's just too many trends in one dress, dwarfing the tiny star. Plus it doesnt help that she has a hairstyle to rival Marge Simpson..adding to the over-the-top look!

It's not the first fashion disaster she's had either, Paula regularly makes the worst dressed lists! Dressing too young for her age in cleavage pushing mini-dresses, or trying to be stylish and ending up frumpy, in over-detailed garments!

Hint to Paula...maybe stick with the American Idol stylist and while you may not become a style icon overnight...you can at least steer clear of articles like this about you.

Oscars red-carpet happy ending?

There was a fairytale feeling sweeping Tinsletown on Sunday, as all of Hollywoods’ leading ladies lived out the Cinderella dream through their dresses!

Big, bold and beautiful seemed to be the recurring theme for the night, with most actresses being a little more daring with their choice of attire! Sarah Jessica Parker drew inspiration from her tutu in the opening credits of Sex and the City and donned a ‘barely mint’, Dior Couture gown with a huge tulle meringue skirt.

Penelope Cruz dazzled in a white Vintage Pierre Balmain dress with brocade detailing and sheer touches while Jennifer Aniston showed the world just how she bagged her toyboy prince John Mayer, in a figure-hugging, strapless, white Valentino gown.

The two Disney starlets who surely should have the princess look down to a tee got it all wrong on the night. Vanessa Hudgens wore a black Marchesa dress with a fishtail, aging her by at least 30years and making me wonder if she’s auditioning for a new role as Mortisha Adams.

Miley Cyrus (right) also dared to be different in a stunning Zuhair Murad dress with scalloped layers. On anyone else this dress could have worked perfectly, but on a sixteen year old pop singer just screamed "I borrowed this from my mum’s wardrobe".

Freida Pinto may play a rags to riches orphan in Slumdog Millionaire, but she looked nothing less than regal in a royal blue, Galliano, one-sleeved dress with intricate embellishments!

On-screen queen in Starwars and off-screen, queen of the red carpet, Natalie Portman (below) wins my vote for best dressed of the night! She shone in a stunning, lilac-pink, Rodarte, strapless gown with Swarovski detailing and was certainly the belle of the ball!

So Hollywood proves, that when it comes to fashion, there can always be… a happily ever after! Pity the Disney Girls got it SOOOOOO WRONG!!

Brit Awards - Style Slaughter

Music's elite hit the red carpet for the 2009 Brit Awards last night and despite the bitter cold,most stars opted for sweet and short numbers. Girls Aloud collectively get my vote for best dressed of the night, complimenting eachother in various nude and creamy white palettes, and various lengths and styles, showing the girls individuality! But of course amongst the stylish stars there were a few major disasters...

We expect nothing less than kooky from Miss Katy Perry, however casting aside her trademark 40s inspired, quirky outfits she turned up in this bizarre 'hello kitty', adorned corset with a guitar strap holding it up, teamed with last seasons spray on leggings! This new punk-rock look is not hot, bring back the old Katy please!

Estelle is known for her experimental taste...often sliding between best and worst dressed lists! This is definately one for the worst-dressed. It looks like she just walked off the set of Dynasty; with the over-sized puff shoulders and bow-embellishment!

If you were born in the eighties..and went through the phase of crimped hair and neon leggings...lets put it down to experience !!!(lord i know there are some dodgy pictures out there of me in my tweens) But at a Lady Gaga concert last week (she's a total legend btw) I was bemused to see half of the audience in bright neon glowing 80's style clothing!!! We weren't supporting an 80's tribute band so what was the cause of this!?

I was shocked and appauled then when I went and "interviewed" some of these girls, this was their regular saturday night attire! And they don't stop with the tights and legwarmers, they have glow in the dark eyeshadows, green mascara and neon pink lipstick!I want to know who these kids mothers are and why on earth they were allowed to leave the house looking like that!

Let me be clear...under no circumstances does this look good...it stop being a trend in the 80's for a good reason...let's leave it to the fancy dress!

The IFTAs Red Carpet

The IFTAs, otherwise known to me as the Irish Fashion Trauma Awards, had their 6th annual ceremony on Valentine’s night and the crème de la crème of Irish stars turned up in their glad-rags for the evening’s festivities.

It’s about as close as we get to the BAFTAS or Oscars and although Ireland has its fair share of film and television stars, many of them are still miles behind in the style stakes!

The Good…

An array of blush tones in keeping with the romantic mood swept the red carpet;

My favourite of the night was Caroline Morahan in a iced pink, bustier, strapless, tiered number, with a chunky diamond cuff and swept-back simplistic updo and neutral make-up…she managed to look fashionable and youthful, clearly those years on ‘Off the Rails’ have paid off.

Another winner of the night… Amy Huberman shunned the glitzy over-the-top evening dresses and opted for a quirky, pink, embellished, shift dress. With a messy updo and smokey eyes, she would have stood her own against any of the cool, style icon Brits, aka Alexa Chung and Ferne Cotton.

The Bad…
There were a few on the night who almost had it, but just didn’t quite get there…

The beautiful Seoige sisters, usually look perfect on their daytime TV show, couldn’t relate this approach to their red carpet look. There was nothing overly-wrong with their dresses, they were just a bit predictable and boring…empire line, silk chiffon-layered, bust-enhancing, broach detailed and deep purple and teal green complementing colours…did anyone tell them that dressing the same as your sister is only cute up until the age of six???

Rachel Kavanagh, former ‘Fair City’ actress, is a regular at these star-studded bashes, so she should have the style thing down to a tee; however, she opted for boring black, high neckline with an awful chiffon fishtail with a sneak of hot pink coming through. The dress made her look bigger than she is - it needed to be more body-con for a va-va voom effect. She’s young and beautiful, so if she was sticking to this classic shape, she should have been more adventurous with the colour.

The Ugly…

Take a few hints from Dame Helen Mirren or Michelle Obama on the art of how to dress an older woman beautifully and elegantly without the element of mutton dressed as lamb!

Red was a fantastic choice of colour by Jackie Lavin of ‘The Apprentice’. However, red satin on anyone over the age of 40 can look cheap and she teamed it with over the elbow matching gloves, a la Moulin Rouge. Not only that but the dress had a plunging neck-line and diamonte detailing. How much is too much? Check out Susan Sarandon, she’s 62, still has red-hot sex appeal but manages to do it with a bit more class.

Finally we have Fionnula Flanagan, currently starring in hit American series ‘Lost’. She tried to play it safe in black…however, the diamonte polka dot bustier that is at least 2 sizes to small for her, makes me want to scream..put em away love!!! Take a hint from Helen Mirren…equally blessed with blossoming assets; the difference being she knows how to dress them!
